Saudi Arabia: Maaden reports 243 tonnes of additional gold resources

Saudi Arabia did report a substantial increase in gold resources. In January 2026, mining company Maaden announced 7.8 million additional troy ounces — approximately 243 tonnes of gold — in its Mineral Resource estimates. The figure combines new discoveries with better definition of existing areas.
The Saudi Exchange announcement was published on 12 January 2026. That is the date of the news examined here, not a new September discovery.
Where the gold is
Maaden’s announcement distributes the increase across several areas:
- Mansourah–Massarah: a net annual increase of approximately 3 million ounces.
- Uruq 20/21 and Umm As Salam: a combined addition of 1.67 million ounces.
- Wadi Al Jaww: an initial Mineral Resource estimate of 3.08 million ounces.
These rounded figures total 7.75 million ounces; the company rounds the headline figure to 7.8 million. This concerns several areas, rather than one enormous deposit discovered in a day.
How large is it?
One troy ounce is approximately 31.1035 grams. Our conversion is: 7.8 million × 31.1035 g ≈ 242.6 tonnes. This is estimated gold contained in the mineral resource, not the weight of the ore itself.
Wadi Al Jaww illustrates the physical scale. The company’s technical announcement reports 76.8 million tonnes of material with an average gold grade of 1.25 grams per tonne. Producing the metal requires mine development and processing substantial volumes of material.
Resources and reserves: why the distinction matters
Under the JORC Code, a Mineral Resource is a geological estimate with reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. An Ore Reserve is the economically mineable portion of sufficiently established resources, assessed against technical and other conditions.
The reported 243 tonnes therefore cannot be treated as gold already produced or as an addition to the state’s gold holdings. Some resources may never become reserves. Further studies, calculations and development decisions are required.
What it means for the Saudi economy
Our editorial assessment is that a larger resource base creates potential demand for exploration, laboratory work, equipment, maintenance and skills. For local businesses, value emerges as studies become actual projects and orders.
The announcement alone does not establish future job numbers, start dates for every site or profits. Outcomes depend on grade, processing recovery, costs, infrastructure and environmental requirements.
A substantial resource estimate is important industrial news. Its practical significance becomes clearer as resources support viable production and benefits for people.
